Nice!

You direct a beam, superimposed on a map, over the area for which you want to see a contour cross-section, by turning the iPhone or iPad.

At first, I thought the app was malfunctioning because mine showed a 100m spike in the centre of my city where I know the land to be flat. After much checking of contour maps, I realized that the app uses the space-origin ASTER GDEM data, which employs stereo pairs for terrain mapping. This probably means that the tall buildings in the centre of the city were averaged out into a single point 100m higher than the surrounding land. That is no fault of the app.

So far as I can tell, the app works well once you understand the limitations of the data source. It also works offline, presumably from cached data, if you have previously looked at an area, although it does not cache the map.

The only feature that may be essential, but which may be absent, is the ability to download the elevation and map data for an area so that the app works offline. I hike in a lot of radio dead zones or outside of cellular coverage, so even with a good cellular data plan, the app isnt going to be much use to me in those areas. It is a common fault of many apps designed for use in the great outdoors that they are dependent upon a reliable Internet connection, which commonly does not exist in the areas where the app is likely to be the most useful.

In summary, this is a very good 1.0 release. I am interested to see where it goes.
